On the morning of Sept. 15, 2017, in Hall A, the lecturers and students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport (UT) solemnly organized the opening ceremony of the new academic year (2017- 2018). UT was also honored to welcome the representatives from the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and other agencies and enterprises to the opening ceremony.

With the motto “student-centered approach to teaching” and for training a generation of students who thirst for knowledge, and are willing to overcome difficulties and ready for the international integration, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Thu, UT’s president, gave a report on the achievements of the previous academic year and affirmed the education policies for the new academic year.

The President also congratulated the new students who have been admitted by UT and pledged to provide them the best conditions for their studies and research works. In addition, he also encouraged the new students to self-developed based on the UT student model of "Patriotism - aspirations, morality - responsibility, knowledge - creativity, dynamism - civilization".

At the ceremony, with the desire to raise the spirit of overcoming difficulties and building ambition for the new students, UT and other enterprises handed over 90 scholarships worth nearly VND 200 million to the new students of course 2017 including 01 scholarship worth VND 5 million for 01 first student (First) with the highest entry score, 03 scholarships worth VND 4 million each for 03 second students (Second) with the highest entry  score, 15 scholarships worth VND 3 million each for the Firsts of 15 training majors, and 55 encouragement scholarships worth VND 2 million each for 55 students from poor households and disadvantaged families. In addition, the Saigon Shipping Club presented 8 scholarships worth VND 2.5 million each to 04 students of Navigation and 04 students of Transport Economics with the highest entry scores. The Digital World also presented 04 smartphones to the First and Seconds. 

The Center for Enterprise Relations & Student Support also announced UT’s off-budget scholarship fund donated by the businesses and enterprises for the academic year 2017-2018, which is worth nearly VND 700 million. The donators are PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation, Saigon New Port Corporation, Saigon Premier Container Terminal Company, Song Binh Trading & Services Co., Ltd., Vietnam Tanker Joint Stock Company (VITACO), Vinafco Joint Stock Company, Southern Vietnam Maritime Safety Corporation,  Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (VietinBank) - Branch 7, Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) - Nha Rong Branch, Saigon Sea Transport Club, Vien Dong Transportation Training Center, Vung Tau Maritime Department, Thanh Dat Logistics Training Center.

In the academic year 2017-2018, UT will be celebrating the 30 years of establishment and development. Therefore, apart from the annual activities, there will be many important activities such as launching emulation movements of good teaching and learning; Scientific research and technology transfer; Raising the awareness of UT staffs and students of the responsibility of training to meet social needs; Improving the management activities by implementing the quality management systems in accordance with ISO 9001: 2015  and so on. The biggest goal set for 2018 is improving the management and education activities with the aim of stepping up the quality of training, scientific research and technology transfer and upgrading the training facility, which  underpins UT’s development in the coming years.

On the morning of Sept. 15th, 2017, in the exciting atmosphere of the opening ceremony of the new academic year, the Institute of International Education and Cooperation (IEC) also held the new student welcoming ceremony and awarded scholarships worth over VND 200 million to the students of Port Management and Logistics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
